This book, collected volumes 1–4 of the classic epic The Story of The Lands is based on the internationally best-selling novel trilogy A Song of Fire and Ice by American author George RR Martin ( New York), the greatest epic fantasy of the age that is now regarded as a classic in its own right. It is one of three story arcs spanning the twelve thousand year history of Westeros narrated by Martin in the series that began in 1996 with his massively popular novel A Game of thrones, also adapted by the Channel four series of 2011. Issues of socio-economic and religious tension are central to the political narrative on which Martin has focused particular attention since the early days of his career. When considering his process of writing books 1 and 2, which take up a good deal of time in this collection, and attempting to identify all the factors that have influenced the development and production of each story arc in particular, he has sometimes struggled to distinguish between the companion novels and their parent work as new unique set of narrative points and themes which contribute greatly to the comprehensiveness of the whole body of work that forms A Song of ice and fire. He stresses as qualities in each individual story arc: ecological integrity, concerns for domestic and national identity, divided wealth and class, and religious and social strife focusing on age old themes of strife between faction, slavery, honorable and noble submission and prisoner of war progress. Like many of his other works, A Song of fire and ice is characterised by careful historical research and authenticity, drawing upon a fascinating range of wide-reading authors including T. H. White, Friedrich Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell – not to mention a diverse array of classical literature and of course, epic literary figures like Homer, Milton, Shakespeare and King Arthur legend. As him the tale began in riotous pixels – an experiment in electronic media storytelling with considerable cultural significance, whereby Martin used computer-generated virtual reality tools to visualize and evolve the stunning fresco-like illustrations that usually accompany characters in his books. Subsequent volumes of the A Song series are slated to be published in two six-book sets, Volumes 5–12 and Volumes 13–22. Martin has also teased the idea that one or more volumes might emerge in six parts as the fifth and sixth books across platforms could clash, although the ultimate extent of the storyline beyond the ten novels up to now is still very much subject to change ( see also series annotations for the longer overview).
