On the brink of breakdown, two year after the passing off his beloved fiancé, Jim Hawke trots off into the country to the Gard Brookleigh domicile, hoping it will provide him with the relief he requires. Unfortunately, this haven in Devon is not as peaceful as he'd imagined; locks refuse to open, noises emerge from the loft, and the apparition of a youngster is frequently visible only when indicated by Jim. His Oxford friends, Jed Trelawney and Emma Bugler, believe Jim has plowed up the place for a particular reason: to confront the unsettling situation surrounding the controversial demise of a harmless infant. Jim is hounded by the demons of his former self and topped off with a reality which is mortifying in the current circumstance: true malice never ends, ultimately.
